Rochester (Strood Pier) in Kent, England, is an important historical location with a long and varied history. Located on the River Medway, just upstream from Chatham, it has been an important place of trade and commerce for centuries.

The earliest record of the area dates back to the Iron Age when it was settled by the Celtic tribe, the Cantiaci. Subsequently, it was occupied by the Romans, who built a fort there in AD 43 - called Durobrivae - to protect the entrance to the Medway. It was an important site for the Romans and is believed to have been the location of their principal naval base in Britain.

In the Middle Ages, Rochester was an important port and market town. It was an important stop on the Pilgrims' Way, the route taken by pilgrims on their journey from Winchester to Canterbury. In the late 12th century, the town was granted a royal charter which allowed it to hold a market and fair.

In the 16th century, Rochester was an important centre of shipbuilding. The town was a major supplier of ships to the Royal Navy, and the Strood Pier was built in the early 17th century to enable ships to be launched directly into the Medway. This pier is still in existence today, and is the oldest surviving pier in Britain.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Rochester became a major centre of industry, with the Medway becoming an important transport route for goods. The town also became an important centre of commerce, with a number of large businesses setting up operations in the area.

Today, Rochester is a thriving town with a vibrant cultural life. It is home to a number of historic buildings, including Rochester Castle, which dates from 1087, and the Norman Rochester Cathedral. There are also a number of museums, galleries and theatres, including the Guildhall Museum, the Rochester Art Gallery and the Rochester Corn Exchange.

The town is also home to Strood Pier, which is now a popular tourist attraction. The pier, which is still in use, is the oldest surviving pier in Britain. It is a Grade II listed structure and is open to the public. It offers stunning views of the Medway and surrounding area.
